When should you choose single or three phase power?

There are lots of factors to consider when you’re in search of the perfect audio-visual performance for your event or venue; for example, you’ll want something that delivers great results but which also delivers excellent value for money, and you’ll also want the peace of mind that comes from using a leading company with a great reputation and which offers help and support whenever you need it. Another important consideration is whether to use single or three phase power, so let’s take a look at the differences and consider which one might be best for you.

What is single phase power?

As a trusted name in power distribution boxes, we supply a variety of products for both single and three phase power. Single phase AC power delivers voltage in a complete cycle of 360°, and uses one neutral wire and one power wire. The current flows between them in a series of peaks and troughs which reach their pinnacles at 90° and 270°, which means that the power generated in this single-phase manner is not constant throughout. Single phase power systems can vary, but typically the current and voltage changes flow around every 60th of a second.

What is three phase power?

Three phase power also relates to AC power, but in this case, there are three power wires as opposed to one, each set at a 120° differential to each other to complete the 360° circuit. There are in turn two main three phase power systems; delta circuits and wye circuits. During the full 360°cycle, all three individual power phases will have reached their peak twice, but because they are offset, they reach their peak at different times. The ultimate effect of this is to create a more constant supply of power, and this in turn means that a three-phase power supply can carry a bigger load than a single-phase alternative.

Is single phase or triple phase best for you?

With the above knowledge, it’s not uncommon for people to default towards a triple phase solution, but in fact it’s important to consider what you’re going to use it for. A single-phase power unit can perform most efficiently when you need a supply of up to 1,000 watts, and it is also typically less expensive than a three-phase power unit. Therefore, if you only require a moderate power supply, this could be the best option for you. A three-phase power unit can deliver higher power loads, and it is also better at conducting power, which can result in less copper being used and an even safer environment for your staff to work in.

Essentially, there are benefits to both single phase and triple phase power. In a nutshell, single phase power is often best for low to medium power loads, while triple phase power is best when you need to place a lot of demand on it.
