Rubber Box plans to power new BBC studio in Glasgow
1BBC Studioworks is currently in the process of building a brand new studio in Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, which we’ll be supplying the power for here at Rubber Box. The project is in the middle of construction as it stands, and the 10,500 sq. ft studio, which is being co-funded in part by the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council, will open in autumn 2022.
What’s the background on the project?
The studio is being built in the newly renovated Kelvin Hall, right in the heart of Glasgow. This makes it the ideal destination for studio audiences, production crew and on-screen talent who want to enjoy the vibrant cultural hotspots that Glasgow has to offer.
One of the biggest draws to this particular location was the opportunity for the BBC to reuse an existing building. “Glasgow is a key creative hub, laying the foundations for our expansion outside London,” said Andrew Moultrie, CEO, BBC Studioworks. He went on to say that “Kelvin Hall provides much needed purpose-built studio space in Scotland, meeting growing demand from broadcasters, production companies and SVODs alike to produce there. Drawing on our decades of expertise and unrivalled customer service, we will help grow the local workforce to deliver more local productions and support the continued development of sector-specific skills in Scotland.”
The BBC appears to be keeping this promise, with a new series of popular quiz show Bridge of Lies already scheduled to be filmed in the new space in 2023.
What’s the reaction been?
The response to this project has been overwhelmingly positive throughout. Councillor Susan Aitken said that the influence brought to the location by BBC Studioworks will help to develop Kelvin Hall as an important and attractive film and television location. This will enable productions and jobs to stay and grow in the city, further driving the development of Glasgow’s thriving creative industries, and adding to the city’s economic growth.
Cabinet Secretary for Constitution, External Affairs and Culture Angus Robertson is so confident in the project that the local council has committed £7.9 million to it, in an effort to help develop expertise in the entertainment genre and build on existing skills and training schemes across the city, to further develop a sustainable creative economy in Scotland.
