Construction Teams

What construction teams need to think about when planning temporary power

If you’re responsible for organising temporary power on a construction site, you already understand the level of responsibility that comes with it. Every trade depends on reliable access to electricity, and when power distribution is structured, the entire site benefits. When it is not, inefficiencies quickly surface, and coordination becomes harder than it needs to be.

At Rubber Box, we’ve been supplying electric power distribution boxes and equipment across the UK and in over 30 countries worldwide for over 30 years. We know that planning successful temporary power distribution is about making informed decisions early, selecting the right power distro box for the job, and building a layout that supports the programme from start to finish. So, with that in mind, here are a few things to think about when it comes to temporary site power.

Start with a clear picture of the supply and load

Every temporary power distribution plan begins with the incoming supply. Whether you are working with a 16A, 32A, 63A or higher-rated feed like 125A or 400A, that capacity defines how your network will be structured across the site.

After that, it’s about what’s actually being used day to day. How many sockets are needed, and what type? 110V for tools, 230V for general bits, three-phase for heavier equipment. Then you’ve got welfare cabins, lighting, drying units, testing equipment, and site offices all drawing from the same system. It doesn’t take long for demand to build up once a few trades are working at the same time.

Phase requirements are usually clear once you look at the kit list. Some equipment will require a single-phase supply, while larger plant or specialist machinery may need three-phase distribution. A 16A unit may suit a smaller zone or lighter-duty setup, while 32A or 63A units provide greater flexibility for busier areas. For larger projects, our expert team can work with you to create a bespoke power distribution solution that meets the exact needs of your site.

Build your power distribution around the programme

On most jobs, the power layout you start with won’t be the one you finish with. Early on, you might only need supply concentrated in one area. As the structure goes up and trades move in, demand spreads across floors, zones, and different parts of the site.

When you’re speccing a power distro setup, it makes sense to think a few steps ahead. Position distribution units where they make sense for the current phase, but with enough flexibility to move or expand them as new areas come online. Keeping boards central to active zones keeps cable runs sensible and avoids power being dragged across walkways or through work areas unnecessarily.

It’s also worth thinking about how power will be extended from each power distro box. The right cables and accessories will enable you to reach working areas without turning the site into a web of extensions. When distribution points are clearly defined and logically placed, you retain control of the layout instead of constantly reacting to it.

Keep safety and compliance built into the specification

Anyone arranging temporary power knows that safety and compliance sit in the background of every decision. The equipment you use needs to stand up to inspection and, more importantly, stand up to daily site use.

Power distribution units should be built for outdoor construction environments, not adapted from lighter-duty applications. IP rated, rugged enclosures make a difference when units are exposed to weather, dust, and constant handling. Internally, the right combination of RCDs, RCBOs, and MCBs ensures the protection matches the project requirements.

The same approach applies across the rest of the specification. Whether you need a straightforward off-the-shelf power distro box or a more tailored power distribution unit built around your exact socket configuration, phase requirements and supply rating, we can supply it.
