electrical distribution box and power cables for stage setup

How to plan an event power set-up when layouts keep changing

Power distribution is one of the most important parts of any event infrastructure, but it’s also one of the easiest things to overlook during early planning. Lighting, staging, screens and broadcast equipment often take centre stage, while power sits behind the scenes, making everything possible. The challenge is that event layouts rarely stay fixed. Stages move, locations change, and last-minute adjustments affect how power needs to be distributed across a site.

At Rubber Box, we’ve spent more than 30 years supplying power distribution solutions for events, venues and temporary installations around the world. From large sporting events to festivals and broadcast environments, we know that event layouts evolve and power systems need to adapt with them.

If you’re preparing for your next event, get in touch to discuss how we can help you create a flexible power distribution system tailored to your setup.

When equipment locations change during the build

Event layouts often look neat on the initial plans, but once the build begins, things can and often do shift quickly. Lighting towers might move for sightlines, broadcast positions may need adjusting, or production teams might reposition equipment once staging and infrastructure are in place.

When that happens, rigid power setups can quickly become difficult to manage. Long cable runs may need to be rerouted, and equipment that was supposed to connect at one location suddenly needs power at another.

Using flexible power distribution points across the site helps absorb those changes. Instead of reworking the entire setup, equipment can connect to nearby distribution boxes that allow power to be shared safely within that area.

When multiple contractors are working on the same site

Large events often involve multiple teams working simultaneously. Staging crews, lighting engineers, broadcast technicians, and production teams may all be installing equipment across the same site, sometimes with evolving requirements.

That can make power planning complicated if every system is relying on fixed cable runs. A setup that works for one team may suddenly need adjusting once another contractor installs equipment nearby. Power distribution boxes make it much easier to manage those shared environments. They create organised connection points that allow multiple systems to draw power safely without every team needing to run separate infrastructure back to the main supply.

When temporary infrastructure needs to be installed quickly

Event builds often operate within tight schedules, especially if you’re touring. Sites may only be available for a limited period before equipment needs to be installed, tested and ready for use. In these situations, power infrastructure needs to be ready and straightforward to deploy. PDUs that can be placed exactly where power is needed let your teams get to work quickly without overcomplicating the setup.

This approach also makes pack-down easier after the event. Instead of dismantling complex cable runs across the entire site, teams can disconnect equipment locally and work backwards through the distribution system.

When your power setup needs to adapt from event to event

We know that as event organisers and technical teams, you work across multiple sites throughout the year. While the equipment may be similar from one event to the next, the layout of each venue is rarely identical for a variety of reasons. A flexible power distribution setup lets you reuse the same core equipment across different environments without redesigning your entire system each time something needs to move or change. However, this is where having the right distribution boxes makes a big difference.

Ready to go off-the-shelf units

Our off-the-shelf units are designed to handle a wide range of event setups and are ready to deploy when you need them. With more than 10,000 units in stock, available across different sizes and power capacities from smaller supplies through to larger multi-phase systems, we can usually get exactly what you need out to you quickly. If layouts change during the build or additional distribution points are needed, having equipment that’s ready to go can make those adjustments far easier to manage.

A bespoke solution tailored to your set up

At the same time, some events rely on equipment that needs to stay consistent from one setup to the next. If you know your system requires a specific combination of connectors, protection or layout for a particular piece of equipment, a bespoke power distribution box can be the better option. Our team can work with you to design a unit around exactly how your system runs, so every time it’s deployed on site, it performs exactly the way you expect it to.

With more than 30 years of experience supporting events, venues, and temporary installations around the world, our team at Rubber Box can help you plan a setup that remains flexible, even as event layouts change.
