Rubber Box keeps international motorsport on track this summer
It’s been a busy summer for us so far, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down! Appropriately enough, a lot of recent orders for our power distribution equipment has been coming from several top motorsports teams (some of whom are repeat customers of ours). We can’t reveal exactly who those teams are, but we thought it was certainly worth giving you an idea of the sort of events they work in!
Formula One
You hardly need to be a petrol-head to have heard of Formula One. It’s the world’s highest class of single-seater motor racing, run by the FIA (Federation International de l’Automobile). Ever since it first began over half a century ago, it’s been setting the ultimate standards in motorsports. Absolutely everything about it is top-class. The drivers hold ‘Super Licences’ that qualify them to drive the souped-up vehicles, many of which are capable of speeds up to 230mph. The races are held in rural locations, on purpose-built tracks that must be A-rated by the FIA before any racing can take place.
The cars’ hybrid engines are deliberately limited in performance so that they’re capable of “only” 15,000rpm (which is still pretty respectable if you ask us). A huge part of their construction depends on electronics – which is also the same way their team garages handle effective power distribution. As you can imagine, that’s good news for us here at Rubber Box!
As we touched on above, several leading F1 teams use our equipment extensively to optimise the performance of their vehicles. Often, our distros do indeed go in the team garages, put to work as vital components of their stunningly powerful mobile data centres. If you’re new to the sport, it’s easy to underestimate how important these data centres are to the racers themselves. The data gathered on each lap helps the engineers to fine-tune the vehicles on the fly. Ultimately, this can make all the difference to winning and losing! And it’s not the only racing tournament we serve, either…
Formula E
This is a far newer championship, having made its first debut only a few years ago. It’s a class of racing that uses exclusively electric-powered cars. You’re probably seeing how we fit in already! Unlike F1, the races take place on temporary city-centre street circuits, which are generally between a mile and two miles long. As for the outcomes of each race, the points are awarded using the standard FIA system.
Formula E also has a particularly interesting twist, in which fans can vote for their favourite driver before the beginning of each race. The winner of the popular vote then gets an extra power boost. (A literal one, by the way: 100kJ or extra energy. Not just a warm fuzzy feeling in their hearts.) As with F1, at Rubber Box we’re in the act of supplying several power distros and other electrical equipment to some top-class teams at Formula E. It’ll be interesting to see which ones start to pull ahead first!
Motorsports is just one segment of a huge number of industries we serve here at Rubber Box.
